 Business Strategy Minimize

Odyssey aims to challenge the dominance of Unitab in Queensland for the provision of electronic monitoring and maintenance services for poker machines to the club and hotel industry.

Odyssey recognises the need to take a proactive stance with its customers in order to understand and contribute to the increased commercial profitability of each individual Gaming Venue. The reactive nature of compliance alone does not meet the overall objectives of Gaming Venue owners and operators, who are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their management techniques and more demanding in terms of Gaming Venue performance and return on capital invested

Odyssey is determined to maintain its development of market initiatives that set the company apart from its competitor through a committed interest in its customers’ Gaming Venues and their longer-term profitability.

 The Market Minimize

There are approximately 1,350 Gaming Venues, comprising approximately 770 hotels and 580 clubs in Queensland operating just over 40,000 Electronic Gaming Machines (EGMs) that generated annual player expenditure of over $1.67 billion in FY2005.

Hotels are permitted a maximum of 40 EGMs. These EGM’s can be ‘traded’ within designated regions via a bidding system for ‘authorities’ that permit the use of an EGM at a licenced venue.

Clubs are permitted a maximum of 280 EGMs. Both Hotels and Clubs are required to submit detailed community impact statements in support of any request to increase the number of EGMs.

Each club and hotel in Queensland that operates a poker machine in a Gaming Venue is required to enter into an agreement with an LMO for the provision of electronic monitoring and related services.

Odyssey’s Market Share as at 30 April 2006 comprised:

  • A total of 299 sites and 8,314 poker machines representing a total market share of approximately 21%;
  • 271 Hotels with 5,737 poker machines with an average of 21 poker machines per site; and,
  • 28 Clubs with 2,577 poker machines with an average of 92 poker machines per site.
